School-Based Speech Therapy vs. Private Speech Therapy: What's the Difference?

As both a school-based speech-language pathologist and the owner of Always Speechy, LLC, one of the most common questions I hear from parents is:

"Why does my child qualify for private speech therapy, but not speech at school?"

It's a great question — and honestly, it can feel confusing and frustrating for families. The answer usually comes down to one important thing: schools and private practices follow different criteria.

While both settings support communication skills, they often have different goals, eligibility requirements, and therapy approaches. Here's a simple breakdown to help make sense of it all.

The School-Based Model

In the school setting, speech therapy is considered a related educational service. This means a child must demonstrate that their speech or language difficulties are negatively impacting their ability to access or succeed within the school environment.

A child may qualify for school speech therapy if difficulties are affecting things like:

Even if a child has speech or language delays, they may not qualify for school services if the school team determines that the difficulties are not significantly impacting educational performance.

The Medical / Private Practice Model

Private speech therapy — often referred to as the medical model — looks at communication more broadly across all areas of life, not just school performance.

At Always Speechy, LLC, therapy focuses on how communication impacts a child's:

Children may qualify for private therapy even when school services are not recommended.

A Side-by-Side Look

School-Based Speech Therapy

  • Must impact educational performance
  • Goals tied to academic access
  • Governed by IEP/504 process
  • Provided at no cost to families
  • Schedule set by school calendar

Private Speech Therapy

  • Addresses communication across all of life
  • Individualized goals beyond academics
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Direct family collaboration
  • More intensive therapy when needed

What Private Therapy Can Support

Why My Experience in Both Settings Matters

Because I currently work within a school setting and provide private therapy through Always Speechy, LLC, I understand both systems and the unique criteria each uses.

I know firsthand how confusing the process can feel for parents, especially when hearing:

"Your child doesn't qualify at school." — or — "Your child would benefit from therapy privately."

My goal is always to help families understand the "why" behind those decisions and provide support that feels clear, collaborative, and individualized to each child.

Final Thoughts

If you've ever wondered whether your child would benefit from speech therapy — even if they did not qualify through school — you are not alone.

Every child's communication journey is different, and support does not always look the same in every setting. At Always Speechy, LLC, we believe communication is about more than academics — it's about connection, confidence, and helping children feel successful in their everyday lives.
